Each article is written by fans passionate about the club and this comes across in the writing.
Middlesbrough FC plays a big part in our area and its rich history means a great deal to its fans. During lockdown, Rob Fletcher, 30, supporter of the Boro, founded a new magazine, The Boro mag, to help people to discover the history of the club. Chloe Tempestoso caught up with Rob to find out more about the Boro mag and how the magazine how been doing since its launch back in May.
How did you go about launching The Boro mag?
When we launched the Boro mag, we used our social media channels to spread the word. As the interest in this grew, we were contacted by BBC Radio Tees to take part in an interview on their drive time show which was a great opportunity to share our story. We also got in contact with the club who, after reading the mag, decided that they would share our magazine and story on the website. This was brilliant for us and has led to further links with the club going forward. We will probably look to further develop the awareness of the magazine and I’m sure this will build over time.
How do you feel the magazine is going since the launch back in May?
Since the magazine launched in May, we have sold over 350 digital versions of the magazine and over 150 print copies, so I’m delighted. I am so pleased that people have enjoyed the magazine and we have had some amazing feedback. Now the magazine is in print, I can only see it growing further as we’ve had lots of enquiries about future editions of the magazine and reprints of the first two editions.
What’s the story behind the Boro mag?
I have written about Boro for a few years now, sometimes publishing online and sharing with fans. I decided that I would like to get back into writing about Boro and so did just that. After reading some of the football magazines I own, I decided that it would be a great to do one all about Boro. I contacted some of the writers I know online and then we got started on coming up with ideas for articles. My sister, Kirsty, also got involved to create the layout for the magazine to give it a professional look.
Can you tell our readers what the Boro mag is about and what can we expect from any future issues of the Boro Mag?
Readers will expect to find long form articles telling stories from a range of eras in Boro’s past. These include articles about the early days at Ayresome Park right up to the Karanka and Pulis era. Each article is written by fans passionate about the club and this comes across in the writing. The magazine itself will be put together professionally and achieve the best quality we can.
All the money raised from the purchasing of the Boro mag is going to local charity, the Teesside Hospice.
