The Cleveland Community Academy of Music and Performing Arts, or CCAMPA, was built by Dr Jon Morgan, a former touring musician.
The academy in Normanby was built entirely by Dr Morgan, who moved to Redcar to be closer to his daughter, Anna-Marie Morgan, who owns yoga studio Ananda Wellbeing on Albert Road, Middlesbrough.
At the peak of lockdown restrictions in April, Jon saw an opportunity to transform the building by re-purposing items to construct or furnish the building. The academy now has three large teaching rooms, a reception, a studio rehearsal space and a recording studio control room.
The academy opened on June 1st following the easing of lockdown restrictions. They cover instrumental and vocal training, performing arts and performance training.
Jon says, ”We cater for every instrument you can think of. I teach piano and keyboard from beginners up to post Grade 8. I teach acoustic guitar. I then teach singing, vocal production, in that there is breathing and diction. Because I’m a songwriter and musician, I teach composition of song writing. I also teach the psychology of performance. We also teach musical theatre, and have a recording studio to record our singers and pianists once a month.”
They also offer music and storytelling classes for nursery and primary school children. Hand sanitiser is provided, and social distancing is observed. Classes are £3 per child, or £5 per family.
