Speedway fans are starting to get twitchy. After a frustrating year in the deep freeze the engines are being tuned and there is a whiff of methanol in the air.
Redcar Bears had their season suspended last March just as the first fixtures loomed then scrapped altogether last July.
But the high-octane sport is making plans to return in May – and diehard Bears fan Claire James can’t wait for the thrills and spill to begin….
Life before covid? Fast, hectic, busy and I loved it!
Travelling the country to follow speedway is a tiring life but its well worth it.
I follow Redcar Bears home and away and I have only missed three meetings in the last five years. In fact, I also travel to watch Redcar riders if they guest at another club or ride in the higher league. I have done over 80,000 miles in just over three years on my car mainly for speedway.
I would drive to the other end of the country for the smell alone!
It’s the social interaction I miss most though, the meeting up with the different supporters at the different tracks, the friends we have made but we cannot see.
I’m furloughed at the moment as I was most of early summer last year and I regularly sat and thought if only the speedway was on whilst I’m off work I could do a meeting every day and not try and fit it in round shifts and days off!
My life has gone from busy, busy, busy to non-existent and I’m itching to get back on the road to follow the sport I love and see all my friends again. Hopefully this summer life for everyone can get back to some sort of normality.
We are due to start again on May 1st which hopefully will go ahead, depending on the government guidelines – but fingers crossed.
I need that smell back in my life!!!
