Coulby Newham and Nunthorpe 3

Angel Athletic 6

Coulby Newham and Nunthorpe FC were denied a place in the North Riding Challenge Cup final as they withered in the second half of a feisty fixture at home to Scarborough side Angel Athletic.

The semi-final, played at Nunthorpe Squash Club, was a lively affair with nine goals, two red cards and a chaotic spell played in heavy hail that made conditions difficult as tackles flew in.

The visitors started strongly and had a couple of dangerous attacks then went ahead with a cracking effort from outside the box before Coulby and Nunthorpe had really found their feet.

The home side, who play in the Langbaurgh Sunday League first division, gradually clawed back into the match and started to make raids down the flanks and from one foray forward an Angel turned sinner and put in a rash heavy tackle that resulted in a bad tempered flare up and a red card.

With the numerical advantage the Teesside outfit started to press forward more and put some real pressure on the visitors.

They forced a deserved equaliser and then took what should have been a decisive lead with a superb diving header.

But determined Angel dug in to hold out from a sustained series of attacks and then broke out to level against the run of play.

Then a long simmering game boiled over again when the home side were reduced to 10 men too after the a two footed challenge was punished by the second red card of the game.

The game was finely poised at 2-2 and with both sides a man down when the heavens opened and heavy hail lashed down, the pitch got very slippy and chaos ensued. The visitors handled the difficult conditions better and hit Coulby and Nunthorpe with a deluge, scoring again and again in a torrid spell taking their tally to six goals.

A late penalty gave the home outfit a consolation but the game was beyond them. Angel Athletic will now play Scarborough League rivals Trafalgar in the final.
