A group of schoolfriends are planning to complete a sponsored walk from Whitby to Saltburn to raise funds for the Headlight Project, a charity that supports individuals and families who have been affected by suicide.
Helen, Angie, Kirsty, Karen, Andrea, Lauren and Lucy, who are known as ‘The Birds on Tour’, had actually started practising for the walk last year before it came to an abrupt end just before lockdown. However, sadly this cause seems all the more relevant since there have been so many people suffering with their mental health in one way or another due to the Covid pandemic.
The Russ Devereux Headlight Project was founded in memory of Russell Devereux by his wife Catherine. Russ tragically died by suicide on May 6th 2018, age 41, leaving behind three young children. The Headlight Project provides a light when the road ahead is dark.
Their main aims are to teach children about mental health, working in collaboration with other organisations providing support and help for adults and working to deliver emotional resilience workshops and counselling across the Teesside area.
The Birds on Tour sponsored walk takes place on October 9th 2021. If you’d like to donate, please visit https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/The-Birds-On-Tour

World Suicide Prevention Day, on 10th September each year, aims to raise awareness of suicide and how communities can come together to create a world where fewer people die of suicide.
