This week’s new music on Simon Shaw’s Discover Teesside Spotify playlist includes tracks from Moon Wax, JP Riggall, and Start and Stop.
Featured Track: Sea Coal Collectors by JP Riggall
Teesside trouvère JP Riggall released his comeback single ‘The Vagrant’ in the midst of lockdown in May 2020 but that didn’t stop it quickly winning plaudits from NARC Magazine and That Verbally Withdrawn Music Blog before being picked up by BBC Tees Introducing and releasing his album ‘Hotel Wilderness’ in November 2020. Originally hailing from Eaglescliffe but now residing in Hartlepool, if the apple never falls far from the tree, it’s because a sense of locale and loyalty are ever-present in his songs and lyrics.
He’s now back, exactly a year on and another lockdown ticked off, with a new album ‘Isolation Blues’. A more stripped down entry than last year’s folk rock effort, all the instruments were compiled in his mini studio in one take, edited, mixed and mastered himself after sitting on a hard drive for months.
A Chamber folk visitation of real life lockdown can be heard clearly in ‘We’ve Already Seen The Dead’ and fables of being lost in the wilderness shine through in ‘The River’ and ’Tiptoe (So Long, Goodbye)’.
