If it needs doing, someone somewhere not too far from you is rolling up their sleeves and getting on with it…
Our part of the world is filled with big-hearted people. If someone needs help, you don’t need to look far to find somebody doing their best to lend a hand. If you ask people to do you a favour or to put their hands in their pockets, it doesn’t seem to matter whether it’s for family, friends, neighbours, workmates or for total strangers at home or abroad, chances are you’ll get a positive response.
From the local associations of big national charities through groups based around churches, mosques and temples, to individuals determined to make a difference, there are thousands and thousands of ordinary folk doing their bit for good causes.
If it needs doing, someone somewhere not too far from you is rolling up their sleeves and getting on with it. Helping the homeless, making music, getting kids engaged in sport, providing food for hard up families, preserving and celebrating our heritage, supporting those with mental health issues, protecting animals, looking after victims of domestic violence, caring for parks – there are organisations doing all of these things. We have family trusts and philanthropic groups channelling hundreds of thousands a year to good causes. We have people who have made connections with schools or hospitals in developing countries. We have scouts and guides, educational charities, bee keepers, business mentors, theatre groups and hospital radio.
In fact there are over 950 registered charities with their headquarters in Darlington, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Redcar & Cleveland or Stockton on Tees! On top of that there are national and regional charities who operate in our area, but whose head offices are elsewhere; there are community interest companies that have a social purpose but aren’t registered as charities; and there are countless clubs, societies, associations and informal groups who are not large enough to register. Big or small, run by a professional team or a handful of volunteers, all are making a difference, all are contributing to their communities.
If you are involved with a charity or community project, this is your platform. You might be short of volunteers, you might need fresh ideas, or materials and equipment. You could be trying to reach more people who could benefit from your skills and services.
The Tees is here to celebrate and support, to publicise and promote what you are doing. We can help you reach out across our communities to let others know who you are, why your cause is important, and what others can do to support your work.
And for those who are looking for a cause to get involved with, this is the place for you too. There’s a real satisfaction and sense of purpose that comes from volunteering in your community, or finding other ways to support those who are giving their time and energy to make the Tees a better place for us all.
