Kids Eat Free in The Tees: Our Directory – Who, what, where and when?

by | Oct 25, 2020 | Business, Causes, Community, Food and Drink, Poverty

Many across the region are stepping forward to offer free meals for children over the half-term break.

A string of Tees Valley businesses are pulling together to feed vulnerable children this half term, offering a free meal, no questions asked, after the Government ruled out extending free school meals beyond term time.

Manchester United footballer Marcus Rashford forced a Government U-turn on free school meal vouchers for eligible children over the summer holidays. It led to a £120m “Covid summer food fund” for 1.3 million children in England.

A similar petition, led by Rashford, calling for the Government to extend the free school meals scheme during half-term and Christmas hit 100,000 signatures just 10 hours after it was launched. But the campaign was voted down by 322 votes to 261.

By rejecting the proposal to extend the scheme, the Government has been accused of “letting down” parents of thousands of children who are entitled to free school meals during term time.

Cafes, pubs and restaurants across the Tees valley have generously pledged to offer free meals for local children. Here is a list of some of the places confirmed so far: with information and what they are offering and where you can find them.
