If there is one thing we admire here at The Tees, it’s the entrepreneurial spirit we see so much of from so many amazing women on Teesside.
This relentless pandemic has left many business owners scrambling to figure out how to pivot, adapt and adjust in order to survive amidst the many business closures due to Covid-19, so we thought it was only fair to share some positivity from businesses who have flourished during this time too.
This month, we want to share with you three local businesses we have had our eye on who we think have been an inspiration to watch and have not only survived, but thrived in 2020/2021.
My Breakfast Box
First up, we have the Nutritious breakfast subscription service, My Breakfast Box. MBB was founded by Jodie McGregor in 2020. After working as a PT and studying a nutrition degree, she found that her clients were struggling to find healthy, honest breakfast options that are quick to prepare. This insight led to My Breakfast Box developing a range of healthy products including porridge, low sugar granola and protein muesli, that can be purchased either on a subscription basis or as a one off, to make mornings easier and give breakfast a boost!
Over the past year, we’ve watched Jodie and her business go from strength to strength and consistently push positivity through their work, from the brand’s epic social media marketing and the positive news that MBB have offset 10 tonnes of CO2 to sharing physical and mental health content and even launching a crowdfunding campaign. MBB has also been featured in The Guardian, The Mirror, The Independent, The Northern Echo and The Yorkshire post – pretty impressive we’re sure you’ll agree.
My Breakfast Box are revolutionising the breakfast scene and we can’t wait to see what they do next. Well done, Jodie.

Tales of Toria
Next, we want to introduce you to a really exciting business which was launched by 24 year old Victoria Ferguson during lockdown last year. Vicky has turned her passion for Disney into a hugely successful soap company and we think she is an inspiration to so many other young women out there who want to follow their dreams.
Vicky explained how her business turned from a dream into reality: “I’ve always been a Disney lover but after my first trip to WDW in September 2019, I really did experience the Disney blues (they’re a real thing, believe me). I wanted to inject magic into my everyday life, and after putting up all my Disney goodies from the trip I just needed more!
“I joined the Disney Instagram community and was welcomed with warmth, everyone was so lovely and supportive. I had the idea to make Disney inspired soaps from home. I had all these ideas and just needed to make them! In February 2020 I officially opened Tales of Toria Disney Soaps with the aim to inject bits of the Disney Magic into your lives at home.
“The response I have received since has been incredible and I cannot wait for the journey ahead.”
Vicky has already employed four people within just a few months of opening her business and has moved from creating soaps at home to producing a full range of stock in her own warehouse. At any age, this is impressive, but at only 24 years old, we have nothing but admiration and respect for Vicky.

Finally, we have Ellington Timepiece. Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock for the past year, it’s been hard not to notice Teri Ellington and her beautiful brand, Ellington Timepiece, flourishing online. Ellington Timepiece Ltd was created by Teri in 2017 with her last £80 after losing her job two months before Christmas. The first limited edition collection from Ellington Timepiece was named after Teri’s German Shepherd, Sheba. Sheba became Teri’s therapy dog while suffering from a condition called agoraphobia which left her struggling to leave the house. Ellington Timepiece has shared this unique and life changing story through the watches, thus creating a brand that raises awareness for Mental Health.
Fast forward to 2021 and Ellington Timepiece has become one of the most recognisable brands on Teesside. They have even just announced the brand will have its own shop within Teesside Airport and is also now available to purchase on Amazon and Ideal world. From Teri’s appearances in podcasts, interviews, and upcoming talks at universities, Ellington Timepiece has helped inspire people of all ages that despite mental health you can achieve your dreams and aspirations.
We’re so proud a fellow Teessider is achieving this level of success and helping to open up more conversations surrounding mental health.
