Stitched Up exhibition tackles climate change with creativity

Design Hub Art Workshops recently had the joy of showcasing their Climate Change project with Thrift Upcycled – this year’s digital (Covid safe) version of the Festival of Thrift on 5th September.

As part of the ESF Art, Well-being & Enterprise Course which was run by Whippet Up CIC, Lucy Leaver from Design Hub Art Workshops developed a proposal addressing the subject of Climate Change inspired by teenage activist Greta Thunberg.

Whippet Up thought it would be a good idea to run it as a craft-ivist project which involves addressing a subject “in a way of looking at life where voicing opinions through creativity makes your voice stronger” rather than aggressive activism – this movement was initially founded by ‘Betsy Greer’.

Lucy says, “The results have been pretty incredible considering we have had no physical human contact over lockdown or the chance to implement actual art workshops with our makers. Recycled materials, and quirky found objects were incorporated into the artwork using hand stitching and embroidery conveying a very poignant message around climate change. As it turned out, it has actually been quite therapeutic to many people who have been involved and has had a positive impact on our makers’ well being in general. Through times of Covid uncertainty and hardship, many have enjoyed being part of a collective project that has a positive environmental message to convey.”

The exhibition is on display at The Palace Hub on Redcar Seafront, for the next four weeks.
